Steering systems are now used more than ever in the automotive industry, replacing hydraulic components of power steering systems. Helical gear drives are often used in medium-sized vehicles.<\/p>\n

An important component of these systems is the electric power steering worm (EVM) which is used to transfer power to the helical gear. This means that the quality requirements of the surface of the worm are very high.<\/p>\n

In cooperation with a steering system manufacturer, OptoSurf developed the OptoWorm, a worm measuring machine for automatically measuring roughness and corrugation on all functional surfaces. For this versatile task, a mirror optics for beam deflection and multiple CNC axes are used. Sophisticated software controls the measurement process and evaluates data taking into account tolerance limits. For long-term process analysis, measurement data can be transferred and saved on a computer.<\/p>\n
