The Micro Fading Tester (MFT) is a device that can track and record the degradation of dyes in light.
The MFT photodegradation tests classify collectibles according to their sensitivity to light.
This approach allows for exposure policies based on actual data obtained for each object tested rather than general assumptions that could be either too conservative and unnecessarily restrict visitors’ access to the object or too much and lead to irreversible damage caused by light.
Specifications of the MicroFading Tester:
Spot diameter: 0.5 mm | Maximum light intensity at focus: 4 mW |
Spectral resolution: 2.50 nm | PC Connectivity: USB 2.0 |
Spectral range: 400-750 nm | Size: 250 x 400 x 440 mm (w x w x h) |
Plage de déplacement vertical : -80 à 200 mm | Size when folded: 440 x 400 x 80 mm (w x w x h) |
Light source: white LED | Weight: 5 kg |
Finding the focal point: automatic |
The MFT can measure color change under illumination in a non-destructive way:
- The light spot on a sample is only 0.5 mm in diameter.
- The total color change ( E) for the selected point is constantly monitored during measurement and the operator and/or instrument software can stop the test when E reaches a selected threshold value before degradation.
The microfading test can be performed for almost all material classes in museum collections, and is particularly suitable for the study of fragile objects (works on paper, manuscripts, engravings, watercolors, paintings on canvas, textiles).
Objects with very high light stability and highly reflective or transparent objects cannot be tested by the MFT method because the results obtained are difficult to interpret.
The MFT photodegradation measuring instrument can be considered portable and therefore moved in the museum to the location of objects, which is particularly important for large objects (wall paintings, sculptures or maps for example) or high value items.
