Even today, the complete surface inspection of artificial hip joint implants is often performed by the human eye. However, the OptoSphere measurement device for artificial hip prosthesis heads is significantly superior to a visual inspection. In a single measurement cycle, Aq (roughness), defects and shape deviations are measured reliably and repeatably. The measuring device has been developed especially for metal or ceramic prosthesis heads. The surface of polished spheres must meet the highest standards and be free from any type of damage such as scratches or stains.

To perform the measurement, the surface of the sphere is scanned by the sensor, which rotates while a rotating plate rotates the implant. The flaw detection software can detect scratches with a depth of only 0.1 μm.

In a second measurement, the dimensional accuracy is determined, which is assumed to be < 0.5 μm at the equator and less than 1 μm at the pole.

An additional touch stylus (rest ball) can be used to measure the diameter.
