Steering shafts are installed in almost all types of vehicles. These parts are very critical in view of the increasing requirements for efficiency, service life and noise emissions. The finished bearing surfaces used as rotary needle bearings are particularly critical. Even a small ripple with amplitudes < 0.05 μm can generate noise emissions that are not tolerable. The ripple is due to scrape marks on the running surface that occur during grinding and are not completely removed from the running surface by the finishing process. These non-compliant parts are often identified only much later, during noise tests. In case of unacceptable noise emissions, the shaft must be removed from the transmission, which results in high rejection costs. The necessary testing procedure is then very expensive because many produced parts will be tested in separate test rooms.

The OptoShaft measuring device can be easily operated by a worker and can completely replace time-consuming touch measuring devices. Automated inline measurement solutions can be integrated into the production process.
